Hey everyone,
Today it’s sunday, and I know what you’re thinking.. Another lazy sunday afternoon..?! Oh yeah baby, and I’m lovin it.. Inactivity at it’s best.. I decided to write a message in English cuz I feel guilty towards my non-Dutch speaking friends who might have no idea what I have been up to so far (of course I have talked to must of you guys over MSN or via another internet-based medium but here you go anyway..)
My stay here in Brazil has been great so far. In the beginning there were moments were I felt lonely, missing my girl back home, and I regretted that I was living with Brazilians (cuz they were really busy during the day – job, school, girlfriends etc. – so that I was alone in the apartment a lot) instead of exchange students. But all that changed relatively quickly - except for missing my girl of course - once the official semester started and I got to know more and more people.
Most of you know that I have been training in martial arts for quite some time. Here in Brazil is this thing called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and trust me when I say this: it is (arguable) the best ground martial arts there is in the world. I consider myself very lucky since I have found an excellent academy (Barbosa Jiu Jitsu) where I can train in BJJ. Although the level of most of the guys over there is really, really high, I manage to do my thing and once in a while I find myself actually submitting someone (although I honestly have to admit that I play more on defense cuz it’s simply impossible to submit a purple/brown/black belt..)
About São Paulo.. It is incredibly big.. it’s fuckin huge man.. I wonder what I’m gonna feel like when I get back to Neede - a very small town where my parents live, populated by no more than 15,000 people.
Traffic is a bitch, especially between 7.00 p.m. and 20.00 a.m. (yeah that’s right the whole freakin day..).. But it can be funny as well: motorcyclists maneuvering through the tied-up traffic, people horning for all kinds of reasons. During rush hour you might find yourself lucky and hear a whole orchestra of horns for instance because this guy in the front of the line was just lighting a cigarette and didn’t pay attention to the traffic light (which turned green) for a split-second. Busses are ridiculously crowded; sometimes they can’t even close the doors because people are hanging outside of busses.
The people are nice and very friendly; always willing to help you out. Most of them are pretty open-minded and in general cool people to hang around with. The Brazilian concept of time is definitely more relaxed than ours. You won’t here me saying that they are always late… but they are never on time.. A good thing about this is though, that it has made me a lot more patient and relaxed. Another thing that has come to my attention is the different perception about friendship Brazilians have. It’s kinda hard to explain, but let me put it this way: Brazilians seem to have many friends, but I really wonder how many of these `friends´ actually are close friends with whom they share intimacy..
A totally different matter now, I know this is gonna interest some of you (especially the guys).. When you’re clubbin, the girls are definitely a lot more approachable then in for instance in Holland. You might find yourself dancing with her VERY closely without even introducing yourself, and a moment later you might be feeling her tongue inside of your mouth. That’s the way it is, pretty cool huh?! (Note: before I continue let me just point out that what I’m writing here is merely based on observations and conversations with others rather than self-experience) Well, if you feel like gettin laid.. Forget about it! And don’t even think about touchin them booty’s either.. Where kissin is all part of the game, anything beyond that is quite unthinkable.. BUT.. Kissin with several girls in one night is very common as well.. It truly is a kisser’s paradise, I guess..
Food.. It is good, lots of rice and beans. And damn.. that’s some gooooood stuff my friends.. The other day we (my roommates and I) made this Brazilian dish called Feijoada (see pictures) which I guess is the Brazilian equivalent of the `American´ soul food. Main ingredients: rice (but not `just´ white rice), black beans, garlic (lots of!), unions, smoked bacon, smoked pork & salt (I will get back to this one in a second). We had like 15 people coming over and enjoying our carefully prepared soul food.. Everybody seemed to love it, and with the addition of some typical Brazilian drinks (cachaca and capirinha) we had ourselves a nice party goin on..
Most of the fruit here is cheap. Especially oranges are really cheap (less than 50 eurocents for a kilo!). At this moment I’m eating a juicy, slightly overripe mango.. Yummy! One thing I just don’t get is the fact that people put salt on virtually everything. And not just a pinch, no no.. They hold that shaker upside down for a looooooong time.. The other day, Daniel’s girlfriend was eating a mango with salt!? I mean.. what the f@%...
The streets
Well, São Paulo is not a city of any architectural wonders. There are literally tons of tall condo’s filling up the skyline as far as the eye can see. The pollution is so bad that they actually have people powerwashing the sides of the more exclusive condos. Watch your step.. cuz SP is pretty hilly and side walks just drop 20 to 40 centimeters. Uphill there are always little steps and rises in the pavement. Carefully walking down also helps you to avoid the massive cracks in the pavement and big (uncovered) holes.
I haven’t experienced anything bad at all. In the very fist month there was a situation that could’ve ended pretty bad, but it worked out just fine (I won’t go into details here). But, some exchanged have had their share of problems.. This guy from Germany (1,88m, blond, blue eyes, wearing a suit most of the time) has been robbed for 3 times the last time a spoke with him.. I wouldn’t be surprised if that number has increased though.. Cindy (pretty, red-haired Canadian girl) found herself in a pretty innocent situation at first glance. A guy who appeared to be friendly and honest, offered to take her picture.. When she gave him the camera, the guy hit her in the face (breaking her nose) and ran of with the $400+ camera..
Police are walking around wearing full body armor on their chest and holding their gun handle in 75% of the cases. I even saw some coppers with pretty big shotguns..
São Paulo tends to give you an incomplete picture of the poverty here in Brazil. São Paulo is the economic capital of Brazil and therefore can be considered as a relatively rich city (especially the parts where the exchange students live). But even here, the marks of the unfair and unsatisfying Brazilian system are apparent. Right around the corner, there is a supermarket opened 24hrs a day. There are a couple of bums hanging around there all day long. There is this one guy in a wheelchair which makes me feel really bad every time I see him. His feet are usually wrapped in bandages.. Except for this one day last week.. Man.. If I had a weak stomach, I would definitely have thrown up right there.. His feet where twice the size of a normal pair of feet, his toes had grown together, his leg was awfully thin and seemed to be infected since it was covered with white spots. Yesterday I say this woman sleeping in front of a large bank with her 3 year old daughter. It was a shameful sight. Giving them money might cross your mind, but that’s exactly what you shouldn’t do.. At least, that is what everyone is telling me.. Whenever I have food left, I just give it to them..
Little Amsterdam.. Just a couple blocks down from my apartment, there is this meeting place for young gay people.. Sometimes I just go walk there at friday night for a laugh. The streets are filled with hundreds of them. Some people really put an effort in looking as gay and `striking´ as possible. I have seen truly bizarre hair cuts, clothes, shoes (I could easily write an whole story about Brazilians and shoes, but I won’t) and what not.. Talking about gay people (don’t wanna offend anybody here..) and being shocking.. There are also lots of she-males around there and some other areas, where they try to earn some money as prostitutes. Near the university there is a place like that.. Some she-males are really good looking and would definitely make the average Joe fool himself in thinking he's talking to a good looking prostitute. By the way, this guy told me that Brazil is one of the highest ranked countries (measured in terms of operations) in which plastic surgery (especially breast and nose jobs) is performed.
And now what?
Yeah, the end is approaching.. But not quite yet.. Before I return, my plan is to do some traveling (to Buenos Aires, that’s for sure anyway) in December, possible meeting up with some study friends there.. Spent New Year’s eve in Rio de Janeiro and spent the most part of January training full time at Barbosa. (haha.. you remember that I was talking about an orchestra of horns? Well there is one going on right now, haha)
Oh my God (I’ve been watching a lot of friends lately), I’ve written almost 3 pages here.. damn.. I just hope that I entertained you guys with my adventures and stories..

Nog even een korte update in het Nederlands..
Over 2 weken zal het semester (en daarmee ook bijna mijn verblijf in Brazilie) over zijn. Wellicht een herkansing in het begin van December, maar daar ga ik niet van uit. Zoals je hierboven hebt kunnen lezen is het plan om wat te reizen in December, afscheid nemen van de andere uitwisselingsstudenten, nieuw jaar vieren in Rio de Janeiro en Januari zal voornamelijk in het kader staan van toegewijde training..
Niet zo bijster veel meegemaakt sinds mijn laatste post. Wat ik wel heb gehad, is een ass whooping.. Pfff. Voor het eerst in mijn leven heb ik gevochten tegen een professionele free fighter: Ricardo Maximus (of zoiets), 1,75, 75kg, een inmens groot Jezus kruis op zijn rug met een bijbelse spreuk erboven en op zijn buik in grote letters REVENGE geschreven (is dat niet een beetje tegenstrijdig?!), 10 jaar ervaring als bokser, 4 jaar muay thai, 2 jaar Jiu Jitsu en een flawless professioneel free fight records met 3 overwinningen op knock out. En daar stond ik dan.. Ondanks het feit dat we 16 ons handschoenen droegen, leek het net alsof hij er een ijzeren plaat in had zitten ofzo. Enne, hij spaarde me totaal niet.. 3 x 5 minuten staand vechten.. En dat heb ik geweten. Het was een eenzijdige gevecht waarbij mijn powerpunches totaal geen effect leken te hebben op zijn gezicht en lichaam. Adrealine was hetgene dat op me op de been hield. De andere personen die inmiddels waren gestopt met trainen zaten vol afwachting te kijken naar ons gevecht.. Het resultaat: De volgende dag amper in staat om op mijn rechterbeen te staan, linkerknie opgezwollen, wat schrammen en rode plekken in mijn gezicht, een paars rechteroor en door mijn verwonding niet in BJJ kunnen trainen tot zaterdag.. Maar het was het allemaal meer dan waard, hoewel ik het voorlopig bij BJJ zal houden..
Tot mijn verbazing zag ik vorige week zaterdag tijdens de training in Barbosa een klein, blond vrouwtje met groene ogen. Ik liep na de training naar haar toe en vroeg waar ze vandaan kwam. Is ze gewoon een Belgse! Haha, best grappig om ineens Nederlands met iemand te praten. Ze is 34 en heeft 10 jaar in Japan gewoond. Ze heeft Barbosa leren kennen toen hij een seminar gaf in Belgie en daarna besloten om naar Brazilie te komen om 3 maanden te trainen in zijn academie.
Tot slot..
Dan zal ik 30/31 Januari mijn boefje in de armen vliegen; truien, lange broeken, handschoenen en jassen dragen; jointjes roken (niet te serieus nemen mam ;)); stampot-boerenkool etend televisie kijken; mona toetjes eten (bij de gedachte aan die overheerlijke frambozen met rode-bessen sap variant loopt het water me al in de mond); beginnen met mijn bachelor-theses; mashen tot in de late avonduurtjes; stappen met mijn inmiddels niet meer zo kleine broertje; Olaf submitten; kankeren op Nick (en Ruud) vanwege zijn WOW verslaving; rondhangen in A'dam met Kroko; in pak werken in de betere hotellen in Nederland (en Belgie); zondag 11 uur met een duffe kop aan het ontbijt zitten bij paps en mams; Jan zoenen voordat hij stage gaat lopen (hopelijk krijg ik daar de kans nog voor hehe..) ach ja.. Terug in Nederland zijn dus...

Hey Taiz! Goh ik zat vd week nog aan je te denken lijkt me toch wel vet relaxt om ff in Brazil te zitten en genieten van de Zon! Ik kan wel begrijpen dat je straks als je weg gaat alles daar gaat missen! maar je weet je kan altijd weer terug en echte vrienden die blijven wel! En het aller leukste van terug gaan naar in NL is dat je terug gaat naar je meisje, dat gaat toch boven alles!! geniet nog lekker daar want voor je het weet is het idd voorbij!

Hoe is t jongen? lees dat alles lekker gaat nou da ben ik blij om. sorry da ik nie zoveel van me heb laten horen maar heb het gewoon ontzettend druk, ben namelijk zwaar goed bezig op m;n werk en school gaat ook eens een keer goed. Dus anders als jij van me gewend was. heb ook ff je pics zitten te bekijken wat een super vette foto's. Ga trouwens nog wel regelmatig naar chillburg naar nick en ruudie. wanneer kan ik weer een keer langs komen dat jij er ook weer bent lijkt me namelijk wel weer super laggen, en ff lekker bij ouwenhoeren.

jeetje, ik ben wel lang bezig geweest om het allemaal te kunnen lezen,( met mijn anderhalve woord engels)maar het is toch gelukt.Zo, je hebt nog wel hele plannen, je hebt groot gelijk.Als ik het goed begrijp ben je met de Kerst in Buenos Aires, en ga je nog naar je geboorteplaats of is daar geen tijd meer voor.
Vieren ze in brazil ook Sinterklaas zo als wij dat kennen?.Eindelijk hebben we Cesar ook kunnen zien op de foto( lijkt me wel een leuke peer)Als je thuis bent moet je dat lekkere gerecht ook maar eens maken.Oke. en hoe vindt je Rick z´n jump?
